Today, Japan sent me two samples of their new Topwater plug and I was just too eager to try it out. My first impression of it when I saw the video was that it just makes too much noise, because there's a distinct noise it makes when it is retrieved.
I was too busy at the office so during my lunch break, my plan was to toss it for 15 minutes, then order pizza for the temp workers I hired. Well all it took was 10 minutes and about 20 casts when a huge fish just smacked it! Broke in my new reel from Japan, the Shimano Metanium which casts beautifully and has a very smooth drag as well. Went back to the office immediately and ordered pizza wishing for 5:00 to come soon so I could go back.
I did go back and had another fish hit it but missed the hook. I am now a believer of this amazing lure produced by Tsutomo Kawashima.
Jackall's new finesse jointed top water lure. The lure is perfect for bass that are attacking the baitfish. What makes this lure unique is the way it was designed. When dead sticked, the lure lays on its side, imitating a dying baitfish. The two piece design increases the wounded action of the lure. Depending on how hard you pop it, it can either create a nice boil or subtle ripples in the water. At only 77mm, this lure is meant to be thrown with light line, preferably spinning tackle.
I have my own approach when it comes to the old saying "Match the Hatch". While I do believe that matching the hatch increases your chance at catching fish, I believe however that you should NOT match it exactly.
My approach to matching the hatch is slightly different; I tend to match the hatch in terms of size, but not in color. Think of it this way, when a school of shad are being attacked by a hungry bass every single shad in the school look the same. It's difficult to single out just one shad of the thousands in the school. Let's say there are 100 marbles in a jar, 99 of the marbles are silver, but just one is slightly off. Imagine how hard it is to find that marble, but imagine now that out of the 100 marbles, only one is purple. It is now easy to visually see that marble.
The pond today was full of shad and the bass were on the chew, I recently bought a few packs of the Fish Arrow Flash J lures and was tossing them into the school and around it. I had colors that matched the shad perfectly, but I threw out one that had a purple back. This allows the bass to single out this lure out of the hundreds of shad swimming in the school. Despite the color, it matched so well that the shad swam with my lure, while my lure flashed just like the school. Did my theory work? I fished for 30 minutes.
I rarely fish spinnerbaits since I feel more confident with plastics, but the very few fish I've caught on a Spinnerbait were always one of the hardest hits I've ever experienced. Today was no different, this fish slammed the lure HARD, at the end, my spinnerbait was completely straightened out.
Was able to take the rod out today for a bit of fishing at the pond. Talked to a friend there saying he just missed a bite. As he was saying that, I immediately got a bite, but I missed. I fished the Jackall Flick Shake 4.8in on a 1/32oz Zappu Inch Wacky jig head near the grass beds around the lake.
I could feel my lure getting caught in most of the weeds so I'd rip it out and continue to impart action on the lure. Few casts later, I feel my lure on the line of weeds in the lake and rip it out, but there was some weight on it. Initially I thought since I was using a jig head without a weed guard, I gathered some weeds, but as I pulled with the rod, I noticed my rod tip dancing. A bass was on the other end of the line! Fishing 5lb test is so different especially paired with the Ultra Light rod "Super Inch Wacky" from Jackall.
The bass jumped into the air shaking vigorously to get the hook free, but those Zappu hooks are sharp and held on. After the jump, the bass swam directly to the patch of grass it was probably hiding in the first place. I can no longer muscle this bass to shore with 5 lb Super FC Sniper. I waited it out for it to finally come out and reeled in my first bass on the new rod/reel setup!

The rod action feels good, I can feel every tick at the other end, and paired with the Shimano Stradic CI4 1000, it's an ultra light setup. Finesse Fishing on spinning setup is fun!

Working in the a.m. sure takes its toll on you; benefits are that you're out early, cons are that you are sleepy during the day.
The day was great, nice and sunny outside, not too hot either. The wind was ruining the action though. Started with the Jackall Cover Craw 4" around the lake and alternating with the Jackall Giron. The Giron produced several followers but none committed, some fingerling even chased the Giron.
Met a friend who was fishing at the upper lake, and fished with the same pattern; the Cover Craw and Giron, and within a few minutes, there was a tap on the line. I set the hook (line cut my finger a bit, I need to make a habit to remove my finger from the line after a bite) and this feisty bass took me immediately to the weeds, the power of the Jackall Hyper Approach was enough to turn it away.
Fished about 2 hours more for nothing, but noticed again that the bass are busting up on the surface around the same time. I tried luring those surface busters with a Jackall Aragon SSR to produce a topwater bite. Nothing at all, there's always next time...
Oh does it feel good to fish again. Jury Duty is over, and I now have time to spend on the little pond I call home. Today was a 2 fish day, and at this lake, thats an AWESOME day. A change of color on my flick shake did the trick. The first two hours I was throwing a junebug flick shake neko style for no bites, finally changed colors, took a rest on the bench since I worked at 5 a.m. Immediately after that, within 3 casts, there goes that all too familiar feeling. THUMP* I was hesitant to set the hook, but when I reeled in the slack and saw my line moving, I knew it was a fish!
This 2nd fish was just staring at the wall. Tossed the lure and shook it in front of her, she gulped it up and swam off, gave me a decent fight
This lake has seen too much pressure. Please practice catch and release.
Decided to change up a bit and downsize baits. I went from throwing the 5 inch Sasuteki Craws, to throwing a 4 inch Dum Dum Hog. Increased weight size to go through the grass and moss better, and tried a darker color. Those changes sure made a difference. Just only my 5th or so cast with the hog, there was a tap, and with a swing of my rod, a fish.
Ten minutes after that, while throwing a smaller Ammonite shad, weightless to swim subsurface, I see a decent 3 1/2 lb bass come out of the grass and slam my lure. I swing and miss! Still haven't got that Ammonite Shad fish. Fished a bit more for nothing.

The Jackall Seira Minnow is a straight retrieve hard lure that is the new hottest technique in Japan. The concept to this lure is of a bait fish swimming straight as if it was unaware of the predators surrounding it. It has a hydro hull design that allows water to enter through the mouth and out of the gills to aid in the straight direction it is designed to do.
I bought two a while back when I ordered an Ultra Light setup but my rod has yet to come in. Finally decided to throw this with light baitcasting gear. Loving the lure already, was the only producer of fish at the park today.
This lure works best for clear water situations where bass are feeding on the surface and is best thrown with light line, especially 4-5 lb test. I noticed some bass fry scattering away from a predatory bass, the bass would swarm in on the school, circle the rock and repeat the cycle. I threw on the Seira Minnow 70 next to that rock and immediately the bass goes for it but turns at the last second. A few casts later, the bass charges but misses my lure. Finally it charged it as my lure came passed the rock ambushing my lure.
Not a big bass by any means but a nice catch considering it was the only fish I saw caught the whole day.
To fish the lure, use light line, as light as you can get away with, preferably 4-6 lb. test and with a spinning setup(although I used 8 lb test with a baitcaster). Cast as far as you can and point your rod tip to the lure and slowly retrieve the lure back to the boat/shore.
Although this bait is VERY small at 70mm, roughly 2.75 inches and will catch small bass, it WILL catch the big ones also, just watch the end of the following video. Not all big bass want a big meal, just like us, sometimes they just want a snack! Here is Hata Takuma fishing the Seira Minnow (note the angle of the rod as he retrieves):

First fish on my new Jackall Rod. Powerful backbone! What a beautiful rod! This fish wouldn't quit.
Well to start, I'm finally back training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, so my fishing time has been cut real short. It's another hobby that I love doing and I'm finally glad that I can make time to hit the gym and work out. The sun has been shining for the past three days and that can only mean good things for the lake. The water apparently warmed up enough for the fish to show signs of life. Some have already spawned and some are already in the process.
I got to the lake today to see a ball of fry and decided to see if mother bass was there. Tied on a Jackall Squad Minnow 95 to see if anything was there to see a nice solid 3 1/4 lb fish follow it many times. Tried the Jackall Giron, a small Bluegill imitation swim bait, for the same results. I went back to the jerkbait and finally she slammed the lure right in front of me. My rod, a Jackall VCM-CAST 68, was bent over as she tried vigorously to shake off the hooks only to get hooked more by the rear hooks. I let her tire herself out for a bit and was cautious in lipping the fish with a mouthfull of trebles, finally got it for my first fish of the month.
Close to three months without a bass! Caught two today. The fisrt bass of 2010!
First one was off of Jackall Dum Dum Hog 4" Texas rigged. Casted out and let it sink, suddenly got heavy, set the hook and it pulled hard like a big 5+ lb fish. Turns out to be close to 3 lbs. One of the hardest pulling 3 lb fish I ever caught.
The 2nd fish came off the Jackall Super J Reaper rigged on a Zappu Mustang Head 1/16th oz. Twitching the lure and it gets heavy again, set the hook for another fish around 3 lbs.

The 4 inch model differs from the 3 inch model by having slits on running through the side of the body in order for it to move more water and attract fish. Can't wait to fish these plastics!
